As announced by the ministry of sports, Virat Kohli (Captain of the Indian Cricket Team) and Mirabai Chanu (CWG gold medalist weightlifter) will be receiving the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award on the 25th of this September. Their names have been recommended for the top honour by the award committee.
After nominating Rahul Dravid for the Dronacharya earlier, the BCCI decided to nominate Virat Kohli for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. This might result in making Virat Kohli become the third cricketer to receive the country’s highest sporting honour. Kohli has been consistent when it comes to his performance and is also considered to be the world’s best batsman. Living up to the expectations, he has 9779 runs to his name along with 35 centuries as his one-day internationals average.
On the other hand weightlifting champion, Mirabai Chanu has caught everybody’s attention with her brilliant execution at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games earlier this year where she won a gold medal in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting event. She also has a silver medal to her name for the same in the 2014 Games at Glasgow.
Like every year, the awards this year will be conferred upon the best.
